Skipton 2nd XV 21 – 5 Wharfedale
3rd XV
With both sides psyched up and ready for the local clash,
early possession went to the men in green. However the home side held strong
through what has been their vulnerable period in the first 10 - 15 minutes before
Wharfedale took a 5 point lead but failed to add the conversion. This served to
fire the Red passion even further and the pressure piled on, although
Wharfedale defended like heroes, they gave away a penalty which Brydon Maiava
slotted over followed by a flowing back move where Richard Curtin fed Lee Shaw
who beat his man before passing to Chris Wilkinson who sealed the points and
Maiava duly converted.
Throughout the rest of the first half and into the second
the game moved to and fro but Skipton gained the ascendancy and Wharfedale
started to concede penalties along with the loss of discipline which often
follows.
Maiava added a further penalty with 15 minutes to go. Then
substitute Matty Wilson broke the Wharfedale lines looking like he was going in
under the posts only to be stopped by last ditch defence, however leading to
another Skipton penalty - this time Shearer called for a scrum which proved to
be a master stroke, the pack which had been dominant for most of the game took
control before stand in scrum half Sam Boatwright released the ball to
the backs, Curtin, Shaw & Wilkinson sent the ball along the line to Ben
Davies who slipped with the line at his mercy only to pop the ball to John Hughes
flying in from the opposite wing to claim another five pointer. Unfortunately
Maiava for once was off target with the conversion, but followed up within
minutes in the last act of a truly exciting well played and enjoyable match
with his third penalty.
