28 April 2008

Skipton's under 9s & 10s were united both winning their groups at the prestigious festival at Malsis. Skipton have not won this festival in the past and for both age groups to win shows the strength and skill of the players and provides a positive future for rugby at Sandylands.

Skipton under 10's entered two teams, Rams & Tups, allowing all their players to take part in the last play of the season. It was to be the Rams day winning all the games in their age group. Captain Oliver Snowdon fortified his team who put in a top class performance with the following results. Skipton 15 Wharfedale 5, Skipton 25 Baildon 0, Skipton 10 Ilkley 0. Skipton U9s 0 - 15 Old Brodleians U9s (played Sunday 6 April)
Skipton U9's travelled to Morley in Leeds to play games against not only the home team of Morley, but also Halifax based Old Brodleians who they drew with in the Yorkshire Cup in November. In a hard fought match, Skipton showed their determination against a well drilled and practiced Old Brod's pack, with George Maloney leading the Red squad into action. The first half saw George, Fred Hewetson and Jacob Taylor leading the Skipton defence with some excellent tackling and rucking especially when Skipton were forced into their own half. At the end of the half, the Halifax pack had scored 2 tries despite the best efforts of Skipton. The second half saw The Old Brod's determined to finish the match with well executed plays, but Skipton kept battling hard with Jacob Jackson making some fine probing runs into the Old Brods half of the pitch and Seth Wiseman producing some outstanding tackles. The game finished with a third try from the Halifax based Old Brodleians, but despite defeat, the Red's were not down and looked forward to their games against Morley.

Skipton U9s 35 - 0 Morley U9s (played Sunday 6 April)
The Skipton squad has the probably one of the best supported squads in the region and this was evident again as Skipton were once again able to field two packs for their away games against Morley. In the first game the Skipton Sharks team lead the charge against the Morley pack and the tries were soon on the scoreboard in favour of Skipton. Some excellent determined play by Skipton saw Sam Barraclough score first with a well timed run and George Maloney follow up soon after with another 5 points for the Red's. Morley did not let these two early try's dampen their spirits and with great determination, they put pressure on the Skipton defence which lasted for some time until Fred Hewetson showed his speed for another try. Jacob Jackson produced some excellent play before half time with 2 try's from the eager player to put Skipton 25 points in the lead.
In the second half, Morley took to the field quickly and the Red's were met with a very determined Morley pack, so much so, the game became very physical which lead to Morley finally scoring two good try's. However, Seth Wiseman with his usual twisting and jinking speed put the ball over the line for a further 5 points and this was followed by a second try for George Maloney.

Skipton U9s 15 - 25 Morley U9s (played Sunday 6 April)
In a very different game the Skipton Tigers faced a Morley pack that were in a positive mood despite losing against Skipton Sharks in the previous game, and this determination showed itself in 2 early try's for Morley. Rian Hamilton opened up the scoring for the Tigers with one of his long fast charges down the line, but despite this try and the excellent tackling from Thomas Huxley and Jack Perry, Morley found another gap and obtained their third try of the first half. Sean Graham also shone in this game as he showed some great skill, quick thinking and very positive tackling.
Thomas Huxley was playing like a professional in the second half leading the rucks and mawls which put pressure on the Morley defensive lines which seemed to crumble as Thomas grounded the ball twice for 10 points. However, the physicality of the Morley pack was too much for the Tigers and the Morley forwards put two further tries on the scoreboard for a well earned win. Skipton Sharks & Tigers played very well in both games and it is clear that all the players in their first season of contact Rugby have come a long way since their Tag Rugby days. For the two games, Jacob Jackson and Sean Graham were voted Men of the Matches.

Skipton U9s 40 - 20 Bradford & Bingley U9s (played Sunday 13 April)
Bradford & Bingley were the visiting team at Sandylands on Sunday and with again 20 Skipton players wanting a game, it was decided to play a game of 4 quarters with the Skipton Sharks & Tigers playing a quarter each. The Sharks took to the field first and faced an onslaught of early pressure from the Bingley pack which was repulsed by the Reds defensive play which turned quickly to offensive as Skipton gave a display of accurate passing, leading to Jacob Taylor sprinting to the Bingley try line for the first 5 points of the game. The pressure from Bingley continued, but the Sharks leading tacklers, George Maloney and Fred Hewetson slowed down Bingley's attacks and the rest of the quarter was end to end play with both sides playing good, but physical rugby. The second quarter started with an exceptional pass from the in form Andrew Bayliff to Rian Hamilton who scored by cutting through the Bingley pack and who went on to score a hat-trick in this quarter. Thomas Huxley was in great form and soon scored a try from ripping out the ball from a Bingley lead ruck in their own half. Jack Perry & Sam Barraclough provided some brilliant last minute tackles to stop the Bingley forwards from getting close to the try line, but at half time, the score was 25 points to the two Skipton packs.

Bingley started the third quarter with some very good physical play, but George Maloney once again provided some excellent defence near the far touchline, where Jasmine Pennent replayed a moment from the recent Welsh tour. Jasmine collected the ball from a ruck and ran in a long forward arc to the other side of the pitch to provide Jacob Taylor with a precision pass before she was tackled. Jacob went on to make the most of this pass by repeating his earlier try for another 5 points. It was at this point that Bingley scored, but this would be their only try of the quarter thanks to the efforts of Fred Hewetson who enjoys getting stuck into a defensive game. The final period of the game commenced with Bingley scoring a second try which spurred them on to try even harder, but in Bingley's own half where some frustrating scrappy play took place, the Red's Harry Taylor obtained the ball and provided a long pass to Rian Hamilton for him to pick up his forth try of the game. Instead of the Bingley players being downhearted, they came back in attack even stronger and scored two very good tries. Skipton's Andrew Bayliff controlled the play of the ball for the rest of the game supplying good passes to his team mates especially Sam Barraclough who kept on testing the Bingley players. Finally, Thomas Huxley scored his second try of the game, taking the Reds final score to 40 points and a good home win against tough opponents. Jasmine Pennent was voted one of the Men of the Match for her superb support play and offloading skills, along with Andrew Bayliff who was vital in steering Skipton to victory.

Skipton Rugby Club Junior Tour brings back two cups and a shield

5 April 2008

Skipton Rugby Club sent a record-breaking number of rugby tourists away to the International Festival of Rugby held in North Wales last weekend. Over 160 mini and junior players and parents travelled on Friday afternoon to play teams from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales over two days of rugby competition on Saturday and Sunday at Colwyn Bay Rugby Club.

Despite atrocious weather on the Saturday all the players in teams ranging from Under 8s up to Under 15s played admirably, leaving themselves well placed for the play-offs and finals on the Sunday. Spirits were lifted further with news from home that the senior 1st XV had gained a historic promotion to Yorkshire Division 1.

On Sunday the sun came out and the weather was much better for some good rugby. With six teams on tour, Skipton had an excellent three in their respective finals and one team in the challenge shield final. By the end of the afternoon the Under 12s had played an excellent game to win their challenge shield, and the Under 10s had met a very impressive Llandudno team which unfortunately just edged to a win by 2 tries to 1.

However the Under 8s and Under 9s both won their age groups, playing some excellent rugby and coming away with two huge cups to show for their efforts - needing a new larger trophy cabinet in the Skipton clubhouse!

Tour organiser Robin Hargrave said "Our main priority at Skipton Rugby Club is that our youngsters enjoy playing rugby, and going away on tour gives them all the opportunity to build friendships, team spirit and teamwork that will pay dividends in the seasons to come. To win two cups and a shield is an excellent performance, and all the players are to be congratulated".

See below for individual match reports for the under 9s and under 10s.

Skipton under 10s tour results

Skipton Under 10s had a great weekend on tour in North Wales culminating in reaching the final of the Colwyn Bay tournament.

Skipton Under 10s 15 - 0 Daventry Under 10s
The first match of the tournament was played in atrocious weather conditions so the skill levels of both teams especially the handling was of the highest order. Skipton came close to breaking the deadlock on numerous occasions before Oliver Snowden breached the opposition defence, further tries by Nick Atkinson & Liam Brown put the seal on an excellent team performance.

Skipton Under 10s 20 - 5 Colwyn Bay Under 10s
Skipton, using the full squad, changed the team and kept the high standard of play to dominate the hosts with tries by Struan MacKenzie (2), William Wallbank and Danny Ridding, Colwyn scored a consolation try at the death but that didn't take the gloss off a fantastic afternoons work.
With a bye from the third fixture Skipton were expecting a semi-final tie on Sunday but because of the weather the pitches were becoming unplayable. It was therefore decided that the winners of the two groups would contest the final which was then transferred to the Pontins playing field at Prestatyn where the lads were staying.

Skipton Under 10s 5 - 10 Llandudno Under 10s
Skipton started positively with the forwards applying pressure and gaining territorial advantage; from a concerted drive scrum half Dominic Firth darted over from close range to the delight of the large Skipton contingent in the crowd. Llandudno replied immediately scoring under the posts and then kept Skipton in check with a fine exhibition of textbook tackling, not allowing the strong Skipton runners to gain any momentum. With clever use of the blind side by their standoff they kept stretching the Skipton defence until midway through the second half they created an overlap for their winger to squeeze in at the corner. Skipton never gave up in their chase for an equaliser but Llandudno held on for a deserved win.

Naturally the Skipton lads were disappointed but the quality of their performances over the two days was outstanding and perhaps the extremely late nights along with a very good local team proved a bridge too far.

Skipton under 9s tour results

The under 9s travelled with the other Skipton teams to North Wales to take part in one of the largest junior & mini festivals of Rugby to be held in the UK. The Skipton pack faced teams from not only Wales, but also from Cheshire, Northampton and Scotland with seven teams in the under 9 section split into two pools for the Saturday start of the competition. In pool B, Skipton faced only two games on the first day against sides from Llandudno and from Rhyl who were both unknown quantities. The base for play was the facilities of the host side of Colwyn Bay, but due to heavy overnight rain, two of the pitches were unplayable and the order of play had to be rearranged at the last minute. The conditions were atrocious on the Saturday as strong winds and driving rain made the ground into a quagmire very quickly, but despite the conditions, the Skipton Pack looked forward to their first game.

Skipton U9s 25 - 5 Llandudno U9s
In this first game, Captain George Maloney lead the 10 man squad onto the pitch to face a local side from Llandudno and very quickly from the referee's starting whistle, Rian Hamilton scored the first try of the game with a long run cutting through the Llandudno defence. Rian repeated this again a few minutes later for a second try. Llandudno applied some pressure but as the elements turned against the teams; the enthusiasm seemed to leave the Llandudno squad. Fred Hewetson & Sam Barraclough produced some excellent tackles to stop the quick Llandudno forwards.
In the second half the rain became heavier, but this didn't dampen the spirits of the Skipton squad and in a mawl, Fred Hewetson ripped out the ball out and made a dash for the try line for his first try of the tour. This was followed by a try from Llandudno when one of their forwards managed to find a small amount of space to get a clear run to the Reds line. Jack Perry carried on with the rout of the opposition with an excellent try and Rian Hamilton scored a further try for his hat trick in the game following a brilliant pass from Fred Hewetson.

Skipton U9s 60 - 5 Rhyl u9s
In the second game of the first day the Skipton Squad again faced a local side from Rhyl who had in their pack a couple of very tall, larger players. Andrew Bayliff opened up the scoring for Skipton with a well timed run and this was quickly followed by a try by the opposition and at first, it seemed that the game could be very close. However, the cold wind and continuous rain had taken its toll on the Rhyl squad and a flood of trys followed from Skipton with Jack Perry getting his second try of the day. Rian Hamilton was next to score despite being in a lot of pain due to a recurring ankle injury which was aggravated by the wait between the two games and the lack of somewhere dry to sit down. Seth Wiseman with his usual speed and manoeuvrability put two more try's on the scoreboard followed by the best try of the game by Sam Barraclough who cut through the Rhyl defensive lines with ease and grounded the ball with no opposition from the Rhyl pack.
In the second half, it was clear that Rhyl were not in the mood for the game and their spirits were very damp. The scoring from the Skipton pack continued with George Maloney reaching the try line twice for another 10 points and Seth Wiseman scoring another try for his hat trick. Jack Perry also picked up another 5 points with a blistering run and Rian Hamilton sprinted past the Rhyl backs twice for his hat trick for the game.

The Cup Final
The rain which made the playing conditions at Colwyn Bay atrocious on Saturday continued into the night, leading to the organisers of the Festival to rearrange some of the games to alternative venues. In addition, they also deicide to alter the Cup Final to the winners of Pool A & B, therefore, Skipton found themselves facing the favoured host team Colwyn Bay for the silverware.
The conditions on Sunday couldn't be more different than the previous day as clear skies, warm sun and a slight breeze made playing conditions virtually perfect and with the venue changed to the football pitches at Pontins in Prestatyn which were firm, well drained and free from mud. Colwyn Bay like Skipton had won all their games in their pool and Skipton knew this could be hard game, but the coaches and the team Captain George Maloney had the team fired up and ready. It was doubtful if Rian Hamilton would play as he was in a great amount of pain with his ankle injury, but the parents and coaches banded together to offer him both comfort and medication so that he could take his place on the pitch.

The game started slowly with George Maloney, Seth Wiseman and Jasmine Pennent making some probing runs at the Colwyn defensive line; however, from a ruck a Colwyn foward broke off with the ball and placed it down for the first try of the game. George Maloney regrouped the Skipton squad and urged them on to play hard, as each half was 15 minutes long. Colwyn continued with relentless pressure, but the Reds defensive line was very strong with the Mawer twins, Adam & Jordon being in the middle of every ruck and mawl. Possession of the ball was equal and the play went from one try line to the other for much of the half. Jasmine Pennent found herself with the ball close to the touchline and she made a long arcing forward run to the opposite side of the pitch and realising that she was about to be tackled, quick thinking Jasmine produced an inch perfect pass to Rian Hamilton who was in support and he continued towards the Colwyn try line. Within yards of the line, Rian was tackled but his momentum and stretch for the line seemed to ensure a score, but the linesmen disagreed as to whether the ball was grounded or did a Colwyn boot prevent the try. After a short consultation, the referee gave Rian the 5 points for his seventh try of the tournament. The rest of the half saw Andrew Baylif, Sam Barraclough and Seth Wiseman continue to test the Colwyn backs.

In the second half the Skipton pack were kept under pressure from Colwyn, but great tackles from Fred Hewetson and Rian Hamilton stopped the Colwyn forwards from getting to the Skipton line. The turning point of the game was from a Skipton lead Ruck deep in the Colwyn half, the ball was fed out to the waiting Fred Hewetson who took the opportunity of a gap emerging and sprinted to the corner to score and put Skipton 5 points in the lead. This try then brought out some determined play by Colwyn who time and time again pushed Skipton back into their own half, but Skipton were also determined not to let the opposition through. This hard play by Colwyn lead to some injuries for the Skipton players with Sam Barraclough being taken off for a few minutes and Jack Perry also in some distress, but they soon were back in action supporting George and Jasmine in their tackles on the Colwyn forwards who now were starting to become desperate to even the game. This desperation lead to Colwyn giving away penalties to Skipton which helped push Colwyn back into their half of the pitch where Seth, Sam and Andrew along with Adam & Jordon pushed for all they were worth in the mawls to get closer to the Colwyn try line. From one of these plays, Jack Perry picked up the ball and slipped past the Colwyn defence for a clear run to the try line and a well deserved fourth tournament try for Jack. This try left only three minutes of play left and Skipton kept Colwyn at bay for the remaining time until the referees whistle signalled the time for celebrations not only from the Skipton players but also some very jubilant Craven parents. The Trophy (which is nearly a big as some of the Skipton players) was presented to the Captain George Maloney with each player receiving an individual trophy and a gentlemanly three cheers were given to the disappointed Colwyn Bay players.

Overall, the performance of the Skipton U9s was outstanding taking into account unknown opposition, weather conditions and slightly different rules. It was agreed that there wouldn't be a Man of the Tournament as each player in the 10 man squad deserved that accolade. The coaches who travelled with the squad, Shaun Wiseman and Simon Bayliff should also be congratulated for keeping the enthusiasm of the squad going in such difficult conditions over the weekend.

Skipton under 8s tour results

The first day of the tournament saw Skipton take on Rhyl, Llandudno and Nant Conwy in Pool 'A'. The first match was a very close affair against Rhyl in which Will Turner opened the scoring for the reds with Jordan Evans, Elliott Briggs, Finlay Meegan and Robbie Karmann (2) adding tries. James Whitcombe scoring in the dying seconds to level up the scores.

Skipton then played Llandudno and some solid defensive play from James Whitcombe, Finlay Meegan and Oliver Burnett, the later also scoring his first try of the tournament, together with two tries each from Robbie Karmann, Elliott Briggs and Jordan Evans saw the reds win 35 - 20. Weather conditions for the final match of the day had deteriorated and despite losing a couple of players through this, Skipton played on and narrowly lost out to Nant Conwy.

On the second day Skipton played tournament hosts Colwyn Bay in the cup final and the squad were boosted both by the addition of Will Rogers who had been unavailable for the pool games and the mass of Skipton supporters who were cheering the team on. Skipton took the lead through a well worked try which ended with Elliott Briggs going over in the corner. Colwyn Bay came back strongly and took the lead but the reds fought back and Oliver Burnett scored just before the whistle to give Skipton a half time lead of 20-15. In the second half Jordan Evans and Finlay Meegan both scored and with excellent defensive work from Will Turner, Will Rogers and James Whitcombe Skipton took a 35 - 25 lead but again Colwyn Bay were not beaten and came back to level the match. A determined run from Reds captain Robbie Karmann saw him burst through the Colwyn defense and he looked certain to score but was held up just before the line, however, Elliott Briggs was up in support and went over for his fifth try of the final which sealed victory for Skipton 40 - 35 and saw them lift the cup. An excellent achievement for the whole of the under 8's squad.

Skipton under-9s 35 - 20 Cleckheaton under-9s
The Skipton U9's travelled to Cleckheaton on Sunday with again two squads and it was decided to play one game against the Cleckheaton pack with the teams from the previous weekends Sedbergh tournament, the Sharks and the Tigers, each playing one half. The Skipton Sharks took to the field first and soon opened the scoring with a try for Jacob Taylor who picked up the ball from a ruck to catch the Cleckheaton back's unaware. Minutes Later Jacob scored a second with a good long run down the touchline avoiding the Cleckheaton defence. George Maloney and Jordon Mawer were always in the thick of the tackles which slowed down the Cleckheaton attacks which lead to an excellent try scored by Sam Baraclough who twisted and dummied his way through the opposition and despite getting tackled on the try line; he managed to place the ball for a well earned 5 points. Seth Wiseman then made the score 20 points to nil with a long run across the pitch to the corner, avoiding the desperate tackles of the Cleckheaton pack.
In the second half, it was the turn of the Skipton Tigers to face the Cleckheaton squad with Andrew Bayliff supplying a well executed pass to Rian Hamilton who cut through the Cleckheaton lines to score. However, the Cleckheaton's coach half time pep talk must have worked and a try was scored following a driven mawl over the Skipton try line. Cleckheaton continued to apply pressure on the Reds defensive line, but excellent tackles from Fred Hewetson, Joshua Richards, Jamie Barker and Adam Mawer slowed the oppositions push. Jack Perry then added his name to the scoreboard by battling his way to the try line which was followed by a Cleckheaton foward showing that they could also score when given the opportunity. Two more try's for the determined Cleckheaton team then followed from driven mauls and play on both sides seemed to take on desperate measures as the Reds wanted to defend their lead and Cleckheaton could see a way of at least drawing the game. However, Fred Hewetson put the game out of Cleckheaton's reach as he found every gap in the opposition's line and broke through to score the last try of the game.

Skipton under 9s do themselves proud in Sedbergh tournament

3 March 2008

The Skipton U9's squad travelled to Sedbergh Junior School at Bentham to take part in the Three Counties Tournament organised by the well known rugby playing school. The Skipton pack won their invitation to the Tournament following their win in the Yorkshire Cup earlier in the season. Not only were there teams from North Yorkshire, but also teams from West Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cumbria and once again Skipton were able to field two sides, the Sharks and the Tigers. Both teams were equally split and faced not only opponents who were familiar to them such as Ilkley and Otley, but also teams such as the Vale of Lune and Fylde who the Reds pack have never played before.

There were two groups with each team playing six games in their group with the point's winners from each group going to the final. Unfortunately the two Skipton teams did not reach the final, but both teams showed great skill in their play against unknown and very well drilled squads.

The scores for the Skipton Sharks were as follows:
Skipton 0, Otley 1
Skipton 0, Upper Eden 6
Skipton 0, Vale of Lune 3
Skipton 2, Preston Grasshoppers 3
Skipton 0, Yarnbury 3
Skipton 5, Kirkby Lonsdale A 1

The try scorers for the Sharks were George Maloney 2, Seth Wiseman 2, Sam Barraclough 2 and Jacob Jackson with the Sharks Man of the tournament being Jacob Jackson.

The Tigers results were:
Skipton 0, Sedbergh JS 0
Skipton 2, Bradford & Bingley 0
Skipton 0, Ilkley 1
Skipton 4, Fylde 0
Skipton 0, Moortown 1
Skipton, 0 Kirkby Lonsdale B 0

The try scorers for the Tigers were Thomas Huxley 2, Rian Hamilton 2, with Fred Hewetson and Harry Taylor both scoring excellent try's. The Man of the Tournament for the Tigers was Jamie Barker.

Both teams played very well and shouldn't be disappointed in not winning any trophies in this competition and it must be remembered that both the Sharks and the Tigers were up against some teams which either play rugby as part of the school curriculum or train twice a week, but in the games which this touchline reporter followed, the Skipton pack showed great determination and skill especially against the Tournament favourites, Sedbergh.

Skipton U9s 0 - 35 Old Rishworthians U9s
Once again Skipton were able to field two teams, due mainly to the enthusiasm of the three coaches' of the Skipton U9's squad and a decision was made to play two games against the team from Halifax. In the first game, the Rishworth team again showed that they were a very well drilled team and gave a brilliant display of set plays and pre worked manoeuvres which left the Reds floundering. Within the first few minutes, Rishworth scored 3 try's by using the well rehearsed and slick set pieces that they clearly have practiced time and time again. Skipton managed to slow the opposition down with excellent tackling and drives from George Maloney backed up by the Red's pack. Rishworth put another 5 points on the score board before half time despite Fred Hewetson, Jordon Mawer and Jack Perry tackling for all they were worth.
The second half was similar as Skipton struggled to halt the onslaught of their opponents who were very strong in the rucks and mawls, and despite the efforts of Jacob Taylor and Harry Taylor, the Halifax team managed to score a further 15 points. Jack Perry was awarded Man of the Match for his determination in defence.

Skipton U9s 10 - 10 Old Rishworthians U9s
It was now the turn of the second Skipton pack to take on the Samson-haired Rishworthian team and in a very different game, the rested Reds took the game to their opponents lead by Thomas Huxley who was determined to break through by driving the ball with the Skipton pack binding on and pushing the Rishworthians back into their own half. Jacob Jackson and Andrew Bayliff kept testing the Rishworth defensive line with good strong runs up the side lines only to be pushed in to touch. The break through came after a drive close to the Rishworth try line when from a ruck, the ball found its self in the hands of Aiden Hartley, and with a gap in front of him, it was an easy matter of placing the ball unopposed for 5 points. Rishworth counter attacked with an excellent try to even the game and it could of been two trys had it not been for Rian Hamilton bundling a Rishworth forward in to touch.
The Second half was again a very close encounter with Skipton under pressure from Rishworth who brought on their stronger longer haired players who were rested in the first half, but despite this, Jacob Jackson showed great speed by leaving the Rishworth defence behind to place the ball over the line and take the lead. The pressure continued and so did the set plays from Rishworth, but praise must be given to Aiden Hartley who used his strength and momentum to drive the ball a number of times back into the Rishworth half of the pitch, with one drive gaining at least 10 meters. However, towards the end of the half, the Rishworth Scrum Half broke away from a mawl to even up the game. Aiden Hartley was voted Man of the Match.

12 February 2008

Skipton U9s 15 - 15 Keighley U9s

When these teams have met in the past, the game has always been a close affair and this match was no exception. In the first half, the Skipton pack dominated from the start and showed their passing skills to good effect as they put Keighley under pressure near their try line. An excellent pass from Sam Barraclough lead to the first try for Skipton by Jacob Taylor who sprinted down the line unopposed. Skipton continued to apply the pressure on Keighley for most of the half and when a line-out was awarded to Keighley near the Skipton try line, it was Thomas Huxley who managed to collect the ball and run the length of the pitch for a try. Minutes later, George Maloney was in the thick of a mawl when he ripped out the ball for a long run down the sideline for Skipton's third try of the morning.

In the second half, Keighley came back with a vengence to score their first try of the game, but the Reds continued to keep on the pressure as much as possible with a forth try looking inevitable. However, despite his best efforts and lightening speed, Jacob Jackson was stopped from scoring within a few feet of the Keighley line. Unfortunately, the Skipton pack made some simple tackling mistakes which enabled Keighley to place the ball over the line for two more try's and even up the match for a draw.

Skipton U9s 25 - 0 Wigan U9s

Wigan was to the Skipton team, an unknown quantity and initially the size of the Wigan players made the Reds wary and tentative, but it soon became apparent that "size is not everything" as Skipton took control of the game. Jack Perry was on the end of a well timed passed from George Maloney which saw Jack run the length of the pitch to open up the scoring for Skipton, but no further points were scored in the first half despite all of the play being in the Wigan half of the Pitch. Sam Barraclough and George Maloney were prevented from scoring just before the try line due to some excellent defensive play by Wigan.

Wigan started the second half with great determination and pushed Skipton back to defend their try-line. This pressure continued, and soon a Wigan player broke through the Reds defensive line and raced down the pitch to score a certain try, but, Rian Hamilton gave chase and produced an excellent tackle to stop the points being scored. Rian Hamilton then went on to score two try's closely followed by Jacob Jackson who battered his way through the Wigan defensive to find himself with a clear run to score. Wigan again were stopped from scoring by a strong tackle from Jacob Taylor close to the Reds try-line. The final try of the match was from Skipton's Joshua Robinson ran the full length of the pitch to score a perfect try. The Men of the Match for both the Wigan and the Keighley games were Joshua Robinson and Sam Barraclough.

Skipton U9s 20 - 5 Southport U9s

The Skipton pack travelled to the excellent facilities at Blackburn to play both Blackburn and also Southport. In the first game, Southport made as much use as possible of their larger stronger players but once again the Skipton pack's determination and strength in their rucking and mauling skills showed through as the reds stopped their opponents again and again.

Rian Hamilton showed his speed by picking up the ball from a ruck and scoring the first try for Skipton and minutes later he did the same by out running the Southport defensive line. Southport were awarded a penalty try for high tackling on the Skipton try line and Jacob Taylor executed an excellent hard tackle to stop Southport from equalising. Seth Wiseman was the next Skipton player to score with an impressive run down the sideline.

In the second half, Southport again applied the pressure, but some hard tackles from Thomas Huxley and rucks and mawls led by Fred Hewetson with Jordon Mawer's efforts to rip out the ball seemed to slow Southport down. Thomas Huxley placed the ball over the Southport line for a well-earned try and a final score of 20 to 5.

Skipton U9s 5 - 10 Blackburn U9s

The two sides were evenly matched in this game and in the first half; the ball went from try line to try line without a score for either team. However, despite good hard tackles from Rian Hamilton, George Maloney, William Routledge, Jacob Taylor and Sam Barraclough, the Blackburn pack managed to find a gap for the first try of the game.

Early in the second half, Jack Perry showed Blackburn a clean pair of heels to place the ball over the line to even the match. Fred Hewetson again was in the middle of the rucks and mawls but the pressure by Blackburn was unrelenting and finally the chink in the Skipton defensive armour was found putting Blackburn ahead by 5 points. The Reds did not give up and in the last three minutes of the game, they came close to equalising, but at the final whistle gave Blackburn the victory.

Fred Hewetson was voted Man of the two Matches due to his leadership in the defensive rucks & mawls.

Wharfedale U10s Emerald 55 - 0 Skipton U10s B
North Ribblesdale U10s 45 - 0 Skipton U10s B

Skipton's B team were below par at Wharfedale missing key players due to illness. Despite the loan of two Wharfedale players, only on a few occasions did the team look threatening in either match, however, Thomas Feather played a true forwards role rucking and mauling at every opportunity, with gritty performances by Luke Dyson and Matt Suter. Dale players Henry Illingworth and Lewis Larsson fulfilled their roles with gusto but indecisive tackling from Skipton was the order of the day.

Skipton Under 10s building on their visions with new kit sponsors

27 November 2007

Skipton RFC's Under 10s are raising their profile with new match shirts kindly sponsored by SpecSavers opticians and Paul S Armstrong builders, both of Skipton. The shirts will be travelling with them to the Welsh Festival of Rugby in April 2008 where they will be setting their sights on similar successes they have had previously - winners of the Challenge Cup in Ayr 2006 and more recently winners of the Baildon Tournament and runners up in the Yorkshire Cup at Ilkley. 22 shirts have been provided for the two teams they regularly field as part of the thriving youth organisation at Skipton Rugby Club.

"Specsavers Skipton are delighted to be involved in the sponsorship of this successful and exciting team of juniors," said Director Justine Sturtivant. "We were first made aware of them by one of our team members at work, Gillian Emmison, who has close links with the juniors. We jumped at the opportunity to help such a deserving cause." She also added "Healthy eyes are a really important part of all types of team sports and we're thrilled to be associated with such a great bunch of young people excelling in their sport."

Skipton U9 30 - 26 Cleckheaton U9

Virtually the whole of the Skipton squad of over 20 players were present for the home game against Cleckheaton on Sunday and it was decided to play one game split into four quarters so that everyone of the strong squad got to play.

The scoring was opened very quickly by Cleckheaton who soon had two tries on the board before the Reds had realised what had happened, but Seth Wiseman once again twisted and dummied his way to the try line to score for Skipton. Cleckheaton scored for a third time despite the tackling efforts of Jordon Mawer. There were some very hard tackles from George Maloney who also went on to cut through the Cleckheaton pack for a try.

In the second half Cleckheaton again scored early, but Rian Hamilton for the Reds found a gap and scored. An excellent long run by a Cleckheaton player put them ahead by ten points but the Skipton squad did not give up. Jamie Barker, Fred Hewetson and William Routledge tackled for all they were worth and in a fumble; George Maloney grabbed the ball for another five points. Thomas Huxley did the same a few minutes later to even up the match. Cleckheaton now started to suffer some casualties from injury and at the death of the game in a Maul on the Cleckheaton line, the ball worked loose and dropped over the try line and quick thinking George Maloney placed a hand on the ball to ground it for the winning try.

William Routledge was voted Man of the Match for his three try stopping tackles on the opposition.

Skipton U9s - beat Bradford & Bingley 30-0, beat Huddersfield 10-5, drew 5-5 with Old Brodleians, beat North Ribbledale 25-0 and (final) beat Ilkley 5-0

The X Factor judges have an easier job making decisions about who stays and who goes when compared to the three coaches' of the Skipton U9 squad recently. The unenviable job of team selection for the Yorkshire Cup at Wharfedale was not made easy, as all of the regular 22 players who attend Sunday training at Sandylands deserved a place, but only half the squad could go. However, the team chosen were determined to do well.

In the first game of their pool, the team from Bradford and Bingley did not offer the Reds with strong opposition and very quickly George Maloney put the ball over the try line for the first try. George did the same a minute later followed by a very long run from Seth Wiseman to make the score 15, 0 at half time. The second half saw Rian Hamilton score with notable try's from Fred Hewitson who ran the full length of the pitch to score and Jack Perry who sidestepped his way to the try line.

The second game was a somewhat different affair as the Skipton Squad faced Huddersfield who they have met in previous competitions, but the reds remembered Huddersfield's strongest players and the Red's pack were organised accordingly. Huddersfield opened the scoring and both sides tackled well, and just before half time one of the noted Huddersfield players broke away and headed for the Skipton line with the likelihood of scoring another try, but Rian Hamilton playing a back position knew what to do and tackled hard, which gave the Red's time to regroup behind the ball and defend, some good defensive play from Jacob Law and Andrew Bayliff for the Reds stopped the Huddersfield pack from progressing further. The second half saw George Maloney once again battle through the defensive line to score closely followed by Rian Hamilton who's speed left the Huddersfield pack floundering behind.

The third game was tougher still, against the well-drilled Old Brodleians squad who's passing skills gave Skipton some problems initially. The Brods scored early on in the first half, but Skipton's well-rehearsed defensive play gave the Brod's side something to think about and despite numerous surges, the Brodleian pack could not get past the Skipton line. In the second half, Jordon Mawer, Thomas Huxley & Sam Barraclough seemed to lead the tackling and stopped the Brodlein offensives until Rian Hamilton used his speed to even up the match by scoring a try for a well earned draw. The rucks and mauls from both sides were well executed, but it was noticeable that Skipton in a maul could drive the ball in such situations.

In the last game of the pool North Ribblesdale were the opponents with all the try's being scored in the first half, Seth Wiseman scored first, Fred Hewitson placed a further two over the try line, followed by a great run from Jacob Taylor for another try and an excellent run through the Ribb lines by Jamie Barker to seal the game for Skipton. Jasmine Pennent also made some long penetrating runs, which gained valuable ground with good tackling and defensive work from Jacob Law and Joshua Richards.

As Skipton had won three and drawn one, they were automatically through to the final against Ilkey, who they had played just a few weeks previously. From the first whistle, it was apparent that both sides were not going to give an inch and the defensive play on both sides became more and more physical as the ball was taken from one end of the pitch to the other, Just before half time, Skipton held the ball in a ruck and slowly the ball was fed out. Rian Hamilton again saw an opportunity of a gap and ran unopposed to the Ilkley line to place the ball down for 5 hard earned points. The second half was very physical as both sides became frustrated with getting close to scoring but being thwarted. George Maloney again seemed unstoppable as he headed for the line, but the Ilkey defence was too strong and stopped the Reds from scoring again. Skipton knew when the whistle blew for full time that they had won the tournament and the smiles on their faces (despite the Gum shields) showed that they were pleased with their performance. This young squad played very well against some very tough opposition and they and their hard working coaches should be congratulated on an excellent tournament win.

George Maloney and Rian Hamilton were voted 'Men of the Tournament' .

Skipton U10 B 5 - 20 Baildon A (Yorkshire Cup at Ilkley)

Skipton B were undeterred playing in a group dominated by A teams which bolstered the usually reserved players to take on a leading role. Wharfedale A won 15-0 despite strong tackling from Thomas Feather, Wharfedale were stronger in the scrums allowing them more possession of the ball. Ilkley A also won 15-0, Skipton attacked better with captain Oliver Snowdon back from injury taking the leading role, solid tackles coming from Joe Rankin and Jax Duerden kept the score down. Final game against Baildon A saw Skipton score a well deserved try, good communication saw Aidan Lindsley pass the ball to winger Callum Jeffrey who stormed on to score a text book try. Final score Baildon A 20 Skipton B 5

Skipton's first away game of the season didn't seem to affect the players as they continued to improve, with some good defence from Ilkley which was only broken by a number of phases by the Skipton forwards to put Dan Ridding over the line, Ilkley went over the line twice but with some strong individual runs from Nick Atkinson producing four tries, Skipton came away the clear winners.

Skipton receives RFU Seal of Approval

7 June 2007

Skipton Rugby Club is delighted to announce that they have been awarded the coveted RFU Seal of Approval.

The prestigious award was presented at a gala dinner at the club last Saturday by rugby legend Dean Richards. The club's complex application was steered through by Robin Hargrave and Junior Chairman Bob Binns, who were presented with the award by Dean, the former England, Lions and Leicester No 8, and current Director of Rugby at Harlequins.

The Seal of Approval, and the Sport England 'Clubmark' award which goes with it, gives Skipton official recognition as a club which is providing its young people with a safe, well-organised and enjoyable environment in which to learn and play rugby.

Junior Secretary Robin Hargrave, who spearheaded the campaign towards achieving the Seal of Approval, outlined the importance of the award: "The number of mini and junior club members at Skipton has risen each year recently. Working towards the Seal of Approval has helped us to recognise and organise our good practices and policies, and develop new ones where necessary. Achieving this accreditation has given the Junior Section a solid foundation to take this part of the club forward, encouraging and developing future generations of rugby players".

Bob Binns, Junior Chairman said: "The Seal of Approval is a major step forward for us. It means that any prospective new members are guaranteed joining a vibrant club which has a supply of fully qualified coaches, an acknowledged child protection policy and a three year plan for development, all of which have the approval of the RFU. This has been a fantastic effort by Robin and all the members of the Junior Committee. They have put in a huge amount of time to achieve this accreditation, and it highlights what can be accomplished with endeavour and dedication".

Richard Mashiter, Club Chairman, said: "We have a flourishing junior section at the club and Sunday mornings are a hive of activity. We are now starting to see the players who played in the junior ranks at the club push for senior team places. It is vital that we maintain this system to ensure the continuing development of the club and safeguard its future."

Skipton Under 9s at Malsis School Rugby Tournament

Skipton Under 9s 30 v Otley Under 9s 0
Skipton were quickly out of the blocks against Otley, combining forward power and strong running in the backs they scored three tries before half time, Daniel Ridding returning to his barnstorming best with 2 touchdowns & Declan Stork-Flatley going over from distance. Skipton kept the pressure on in the second half Declan Stork-Flatley completing a brilliant hat-trick along with a fine individual effort from Nick Atkinson.

Skipton Under 9s 10 v Wharfedale B Under 9s 10
Skipton started well with Declan Stork-Flatley again proving lethal when allowed a sniff of the tryline, but they didn’t keep the intensity of the first game and a determined Wharfedale team fought back with a try of their own. From then on it was an even contest, Sam Arkwright scored when he straightened his line and carved through the heart of the Wharfedale defence with a silky run, only for Wharfedale to bounce straight back to claim an equalizing try, neither team could force the decisive score although Wharfedale finished strongly.

Skipton Under 9s 0 v Malsis School Under 9s 20
With Wharfedale Bs also beating Otley by 6 tries to nil and due to a tight time schedule the 2nd finalist was decided by the toss of a coin, Skipton’s luck was in so they contested the final against the hosts. Malsis were always in command, the fact that they are a school side and train together on a regular basis was obvious, they moved the ball around at speed and scored 2 tries either side of half time. To their credit Skipton didn’t let their heads drop and pushed for a score of their own in the last quarter but Malsis held out to claim the trophy.

With a well run tournament, glorious weather and plenty of fine rugby, the day was enjoyed by players and spectators alike, the Skipton boys finished their season on a high note; all the squad have contributed and all have improved, so we look forward to next season with much optimism.

Skipton Under 9s, 10s and 11s travel to Leeds Tykes' training camp

24 April 2007

Three of Skipton’s junior sides travelled over to Kirkstall on Sunday morning to be put through their paces by the Leeds Tykes coaching team along with 3 members of their first team squad.

The two hour session consisted of a vigorous warm-up followed by each coach concentrating on a specific discipline - tackling, catching, kicking and making the ball available when going into contact. Everyone seemed to enjoy the experience; the head coach seemed impressed with the players’ skill levels and the effort they put in to the training.

After the session and lunch they re-boarded the coaches (the vehicles not the men in tracksuits!) and headed off to Headingley to join a crowd of over 7,000 to watch Leeds Tykes play Rotherham.

Although Leeds lost a close game decided by a last minute drop goal, they received the championship trophy for promotion back into the Guinness Premiership and, when they had finished parading the silverware around the stadium, they took time out to sign autographs for the fans including some of the Skipton contingent.

Wharfedale U14s 10 vs Skipton U14s 10

On a hot sunny morning Skipton U14s travelled away to local rivals Wharfedale, and played their best team effort of the season. Early possession and pressure was all with Skipton, but the only score was one penalty from Jordan Garrod. Wharfedale then gained the upper hand, and took the lead with a try under the posts from centre Matthew Ross (ex Skipton). The conversion was missed, and so the score was 5-3.

Half time provided a much needed water break, then Skipton reapplied the pressure on the Wharfedale try line. Spurning a penalty right under the posts, they quickly drove forward again which resulted in captain Paul Mahler getting over the line. The conversion by Danny Guest went over giving Skipton the lead again at 10-5. Wharfedale duly responded, and an interception from scrum half Dan Scothern gave Wharfedale an attacking position. However the Skipton team defended admirably and their pack managed to hold up two scoring attempts that got over the try line. However the Wharfedale pressure finally told, and Alex McIntyre scored in the final minute. The conversion was missed again, giving a final score of 10-10.

With schoolmates playing against each other on both teams, this game was extremely well contested and honours even a fair result.

Skipton Under 9s 0 v Otley Under 9s 15

Skipton played three ten minute matches against a strong Otley squad. The first game caught Skipton half asleep as Otley scored two quick tries but Skipton fought back with some good strong running from Nick Atkinson. The problem for Skipton was the lack of ball retention when tackled, so many try scoring opportunities were squandered. Otley took advantage of another turnover ball and added a third try to seal the victory.

Skipton Under 9s 10 v Otley Under 9s 0

In their second game, Skipton woke up and, although again they often lost the ball when in possession, the Otley team failed to take advantage, mainly because Luke Dyson put in a phenomenal stint of textbook tackling. Skipton got on the scoreboard when Declan Stork-Flatley nipped over for a typical opportunist try, followed by Oliver Snowden capping a fine display with the decisive second score.

Skipton Under 9s 5 v Otley Under 9s 10

The third match was an even affair with Otley again fielding their strongest team. They scored two tries before Declan Stork-Flatley ran in from distance to score and provide a tight finish. The team gave a more coherent performance but still often forgot to let the ball do the work!

In their second game Skipton Bs were given a clinical display of finishing by a bigger & faster side, Ribb scoring at regular intervals throughout the game. Against this so far unbeaten team, game one saw Skipton continuing to do what they are best at - tackling, nipping any Malsis attack in the bud. Skipton U11s 33 Cleckheaton U11s 21

Simply WOW! What an improvement of mammoth proportions, proving they have the ability and the heart to fight and win. A very close fought 1st half saw a quick thinking Will Guest batter his way through the defence from a penalty to score Skipton's opening try after only five minutes. Soon however to be cancelled out by a big effort from Cleckheaton.

Skipton, still with their tails up, were playing tough organised rugby and were keeping Cleck on the back foot constantly. The pressure eventually telling when man of the match and hat trick scorer, Will Pennet, was driven over for an excellent team effort score.

Cleck hit back again on the stroke of half time and lead by a conversion.
Skipton were hungry to hit back after the break. More good teamwork lead to an early score in the second. Closely supported by the Hewitson's and Denney, the bulldozing skipper, Sam Ridding, crashed over the line.

Again Cleck hit back with a converted try, ahead again by 2! With only 10 mins on the clock Skipton pushed harder and Cleck started to look flustered by the pressure, Pennet, supported by Jane Newell and Wallbank made a scything run and was driven over for his second try.

After missing his first conversion, Guesty now had his kicking boots on and was converting well (4 out of 5). With no time remaining and coaches and supporters yelling for Skipton to clear to touch and end the game, Pennet was having nothing of it. He cut through four or five would be tacklers from the half way to score his third and a great solo try, again successfully converted by Guesty as the final whistle blew.

The culmination of a strong team effort and the best performance to date by all, well done !

Skipton U9s B Team 5 Cleackheaton U9s 25

In game one Skipton fielded their B team and acquitted themselves well with Thomas Lloyd and Thomas Feather to the fore upfront. Cleckheaton scored twice within quick succession but undeterred Skipton came back with Dominic Firth being stopped short of the line. Cleckheaton snatched another try before half time and two more shortly after the break before Thomas Feather blasted through a couple of tackles and ran in from the halfway line. It was a strong finish to a good team effort with Edward Naylor heavily involved and some nippy running from Jake Emmison.

Skipton U9s A Team 35 Cleckheaton U9s 0

In the second game Skipton were in unstoppable form scoring 7 tries with William Wallbank collecting a well deserved hat trick. The whole team contributed, playing some fine running rugby with the other scores coming from Oliver Snowdon (2), Daniel Ridding and Declan Stork-Flatley. Special mention should be made for the second best tackle of the weekend when Samuel Arkwright stopped Cleckheaton's strongest runner with Lewsey like power and precision, this summed up the team performance.

Skipton U10s 20 Keighley U10s 0 (played at Baildon)

Keighley started the game and almost scored direct from the kickoff, held up only inches from the line. The rest of the half was end to end and equally exciting for the spectators but surprisingly finished scoreless.

Skipton started the second half in determined mood and and when Joshua Waind took the ball from the kick off, he ran round and through the Keighley defence to score the opening try. A bulldozing run from man of the match Harry Stewart took Skipton back upto the Keighley line where quick thinking from Thomas Lacey took him over for Skipton's second. Keighley attacked the Skipton line and were held up by good tackling from Chris Kemp and Harry Maltby before they recycled the ball and forced a way through for Keighley's opening try. Harry Stewart caused problems for the Keighley defence throughout the game and he again set up Thomas Lacey who barged through the Keighley line to grab his second try. The game was rounded off in style by Skipton when Sam Hollings sprinted into the corner from inside his own half to put the game beyond Keighley's reach.

The second game saw Skipton on the back foot despite Samuel Arkwright achieving a high rate of successful tackles, however, poor handling by the team and a bit of bad luck made Selby run away winners.

In their third game Skipton did well against a strong Huddersfield side. They started well with a run down the left wing by Luke Dyson opening up the scoring. The second try was as a result of good teamwork, a driving maul allowed Oliver Snowdon to touch down to end half time at 10 all. Unfortunately it wasn't enough despite good defensive work from Dyson and Hodgson. Skipton can take heart from the days play, good teamwork and onside skills are all signs that their game is developing.

Wharfedale defence dominated this game continually stopping Skipton's runs and drives short of the line. Wharfedale notched up the scores committing Skipton defence well, with players left over to score down the wings. Skipton looked strong in the mauls with Thomas Feather and Aiden Lindsley but it was a pickup and powerful run by Struan Mackenzie that bought their only try.
